It's not that an old injury never heals. It's that ordinary sleep positions may have been quietly working against it, night after night, for years.
My mom was in a car accident years ago that left her with whiplash.
What I actually remember isn't the accident itself, I was too young to really understand what had happened. It's the mornings after, for years afterward.
She'd wake up and reach up and press her hand against her neck for a second, before she'd even said good morning.
I assumed that was just permanent. That some injuries stay a part of you, and you learn to live around them.
Once I actually started paying attention, I realized it wasn't just her.
A shoulder that never quite came back after a fall. An old sports injury that still tightens up on the wrong night. A neck that's been "basically fine" for a decade except it isn't, not really.
Every time, the person telling it already knows exactly why their neck or shoulder hurts.
What they don't know is why it never actually finished healing.
An old injury isn't generalized soreness. It has a specific, still-vulnerable point, and a generic "supportive" pillow treats that point exactly the same as it treats a body that's never been hurt at all.
If a sleep position puts weight on that exact spot, night after night, that's not neutral.
That's the injury getting quietly re-strained before it ever gets a real chance to rest.
So I built a shape around that, holding the vulnerable point still instead of letting it get re-strained every night.
My mom was the first person who actually tried it.
A few months in, she mentioned something almost in passing.
Said her neck finally felt "almost healed," and when I asked what had actually changed, she told me it wasn't anything medical.
She'd just stopped waking up having re-aggravated it every single night, without ever fully realizing that's what had been happening all along.
